An Update on the State Board of Education's Anti-LGBTQIA+ Resolution
On Monday, December 12, 2022, the State Board of Education heard the last round of testimony on its anti-LGBTQIA+ "Resolution to Oppose the Proposed Changes to Title IX and to Affirm Parental Rights and Local Control of Ohio K-12 Education." As had been the case in previous months, the vast majority of those in attendance were against the resolution.
On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, the Ohio State Board of Education voted in a 10-7 vote (with one abstention) to adopt the resolution. Prior to its adoption, the resolution was amended during the meeting with an amendment proposed by Board member Michelle Newman. This amendment removed the first three paragraphs of the Toal resolution, which asserted that “Biological sex – male and female – is one such objective, scientific fact.” The final, adopted resolution directs the acting Superintendent of Public Instruction to issue a mailed copy of the resolution to Ohio school districts indicating that the State Board of Education opposes proposed regulatory changes to title IX released by the U.S. Department of Education on June 23, 2022.
We will be urging the Board of Education to repeal this resolution in the new year – stay tuned for next steps.
